The Electric Guitar Chain, From DI to a Mix That Fits
Electric guitar tone is mostly made at the amp, real or simulated. The chain after it is about fitting that tone into a mix, and that is where most home mixes go wrong.
1. The amp sim is the foundation
Feed your amp sim a healthy DI level and resist the bedroom instinct of too much gain. Distortion that sounds huge solo turns to mush in a mix, and nearly every famous heavy tone uses less gain than you think. Pick the amp and cab style by the record you are chasing, then commit.
2. High pass: the move that fixes busy mixes
In a dense arrangement, filter electrics up around 80 to 120 Hz. The low end you lose was never going to be heard under the bass and kick anyway, and removing it is the single fastest way to clean up a crowded low end. In sparse mixes you can keep more weight, the mix density decides, not a rule.
3. Midrange surgery, light hands
Boxiness gathers around 300 to 500 Hz, fizz lives way up at 6 to 8 kHz on high gain tones, and presence sits at 2 to 4 kHz, the same range where harshness lives, so move in half dB steps. Compression on distorted guitar is often barely needed, the amp already compressed it. Clean tones take 3:1 with medium attack happily.
4. Width comes from doubles, not wideners
The professional rhythm guitar sound is two separate performances panned hard left and right. A stereo widener on a single mono take collapses unpredictably in mono and never matches the depth of a real double. Track it twice, it is worth it every time.
5. Color last
Modulation, delay, and reverb close the chain, with time-based effects on 100 percent wet sends. A slap delay around 80 to 120 ms is the classic way to give a lead size without pushing it back the way reverb does.
