The Bass Chain: Solid Low End on Every Speaker

Bass is the hardest instrument to judge on home monitors and the first thing that falls apart on earbuds. This chain is built for translation.

1. Filter what no speaker plays

High pass at 30 to 40 Hz. The energy below that is felt by your meters, not heard by your listeners, and it steals headroom from the whole mix. This is not making the bass thinner, it is making the part of the bass people hear louder.

2. The attack lives at 700 to 800 Hz

When a bass line disappears in the mix, the instinct is to boost lows. The fix is usually the opposite end: pick and finger attack lives around 700 to 800 Hz, and a few dB there lets the note read clearly even on a phone speaker. Mud, as ever, gathers around 200 to 300 Hz, cut it there if the low mids are clouding.

3. Compress for consistency, not effect

Bass anchors the song, so its level cannot wander. A ratio around 4:1 with medium attack and 3 to 6 dB of gain reduction keeps every note in the pocket. This is one instrument where fairly obvious compression is correct, evenness is the entire point.

4. Saturation is the small speaker secret

Small speakers cannot reproduce a fundamental at 60 Hz, but they can reproduce its harmonics. Saturation (a dedicated saturator like Decapitator, or an amp style drive) generates those harmonics, so the brain reconstructs the low note that is not physically there. This is why pro mixes have audible bass on laptops and yours might not.

5. Keep the low end mono

Below roughly 100 to 120 Hz, keep bass centered and mono. Stereo width in the lows causes phase trouble on club systems and vinyl and collapses unpredictably on mono playback. Width belongs to guitars, keys, and effects, not the foundation.
