LUFS Targets for Every Platform (and Why You Should Not Slam Your Master)
Every major platform turns your master up or down to its own loudness target. Master for that reality and you keep your dynamics, fight it and you only lose punch.

What normalization actually does
These platforms do not reject loud masters, they normalize them. Submit a master crushed to -8 LUFS integrated and Spotify simply plays it 6 dB quieter, you gained nothing and paid for it in flattened dynamics and limiter distortion. A master with real transients at -14 plays at the same perceived volume and hits harder.
How to hit the target
Mix into a bus that peaks healthy, then in mastering use gentle compression for glue, EQ for tonal balance, and a true peak limiter as the final plugin with its ceiling at -1 dBTP. Watch integrated LUFS over the whole song, not momentary peaks. If you need more than about 6 dB of limiting to reach your target, the problem is in the mix, go back.
The honest exception
Genre context still matters. If every reference track in your style measures -9, a -14 master may feel polite next to them when normalization is off (clubs, DJs, some players). The professional compromise: master as loud as it can go with no audible damage, often landing between -14 and -10 for dense modern productions, and never chase a number at the cost of punch.
