The Drum Chain: From Raw Tracks to a Glued Kit

Drums are where mixing gets technical, polarity, gating, parallel buses. Get these mechanics right and the kit almost mixes itself.

1. Kick: two mics, two jobs

Kick in (inside the drum) carries the beater attack, shape it around 3 to 5 kHz for click and tighten the lows. Kick out captures body and boom, it owns 50 to 80 Hz. Balance the two faders to taste, attack from one, weight from the other, instead of forcing one mic to do both jobs with EQ.

2. Snare: flip the bottom mic

The snare bottom mic points at the drum from the opposite side as the top mic, so the two signals arrive polarity reversed. Flip polarity on the bottom mic, or the pair partially cancels and the snare goes thin and hollow. This one button is the most common missed step in home drum mixes. Top mic brings the crack, bottom brings the wires and sizzle.

3. Toms: gate or edit the bleed

Tom mics spend most of the song collecting cymbal wash and snare bleed. Gate them, threshold set so only tom hits open the gate, with a fast attack and a musical release, or slice the silence out by hand for ballads where gates chatter. The floor tom gets a low shelf for weight, rack toms get their boxiness cut around 400 to 600 Hz.

4. Rooms and New York compression

Here is the pro glue move: send the kit to a parallel bus, crush it with heavy compression, fast attack, 10 or more dB of reduction, then blend that destroyed signal underneath the clean kit. The punch of the dry drums survives while the sustain and excitement of the crushed bus fills in. Room mics love this treatment.

5. The drum bus

All kit tracks route to one stereo bus carrying a gentle glue compressor (the SSL G style, like the SSL G-Master Buss Compressor, is the classic) doing just 2 to 4 dB at a slow attack, plus a touch of saturation. The bus is where the kit becomes one instrument instead of eight microphones.
